Firesteed 1997 Barbera d'Asti D.O.C. Reviews 1997 Firesteed Barbera d'Asti Rating: *** Price: US$9.00 (750 ml.) Tasting Notes: General Qualities: Medium-bodied, light complexity, dry, balanced acidity, little or no oak, soft tannins Aromas: Black cherry, burnt toast, nutty Flavors: boysenberry, spicy Other Descriptors: juicy, soft Date Reviewed: 05/29/00 Reviewed by: Leslie Sbrocco, Norm Roby "Wine from WineToday, The New York Times on the Web, May 29, 2000 Firesteed: complex flavors, no hint of bricks and mortar - I was alarmed when I discovered Firesteed makes a '97 BARBERA D'ASTI ($9). Until I realized that Howard actually buys the grapes from a grower in the little Italian region of Asti. This is a softer, friendlier version of this Italian wine, seducing with aromas of strawberries and cream, then finishing you off with delicious mint, sage, and raspberry flavors. It's got to be one of the best deals in the wine world. "The Seattle Weekly" Dennis Globus, The Vine Print, October 26, 2000 Firesteed also has a Barbera d'Asti 1997 from Piedmont. What a marvelously pure expression of blueberry-cranberry-plum in sight, smell and taste this wine is, and what a vibrant weaving of leather and violets and vanilla cream it offers. Both wines Worth a Search at about $10. "These Enchanters Come in 1s, 2s and 3s" Fredric Koeppel, The Commercial Appeal, September 6, 2000 ©
