Versatile Pinot Noir for Summer Grilling.  We have tasted this Pinot Noir with salmon each year for the past several years (thank you, Howard!), and it has always paired well with the grilled fish.  Please note that this wine is nearly a decade old.  Winemaking technique, selection of appropriate lots and a light hand with new oak combined to create a wine with balanced structure - just right for aging. The nose is light cherry and strawberry with nuances of dusty earth, orange zest and floral perfume.  the palate offers flavors of tangy cherry, earth and light spicy oak on the finish.

Don't be afraid of threat dusty, old wine  This Oregon Wine is a decade old, and likely hard to find around here. But if you can find it online it would be worth ordering. This is a wonderful example of a delicate Pinot Noir and how it can evolve and develop more earthy flavors such as mushrooms and spices as it ages and loses some of the youthful fruitiness. This would go marvelous with light pasta dishes, salmon or even a grilled portobello mushroom. this should cost in the neighborhood of $50 depending on which Web site you find it.

Exceptional:  1995 Citation Pinot Noir, Oregon ($50).  Yes, a 10-year-old Pinot Noir just being released.  Pepper, spice, pale color, but racy and sleek, with moderate tannins and a lovely fruit base.  A 1994 Citation ($50) is slightly earthier with a sweet entry and Burgundian finish.  Both available at 503-623-8683.
